A Solution For People That Hide Their Router In The Garage?

One negative side effect working from home has had on us techies is dealing with people who constantly complain about the reliability of VPN connections on their home networks.  It often turns out that they’ve stuck their WiFi router in the garage, and actually do their work on the other side of the house.  In other cases it’s stuck in the basement and they work in the attic.  Trying to explain why this has a negative effect on their connectivity doesn’t tend to go well, as their “normal internet works perfectly fine” and the problem has to be with the VPN.

WaveCore have been testing something which might help in these cases, an Ethernet bridge capable of penetrating up to 12″ of concrete.  The bridge is capable of up to 10Gbps without obstruction and their tests saw a 3Gbps connection penetrating 8″ and a 4Gbps connection through a 12″ thick concrete wall.   This first product is likely to be a bit on the expensive side, as it’s competition is properly drilling holes through concrete and running conduit and cable however it should get less expensive over time.

The only problem will be convincing the users to run Ethernet from the bridge, instead of daisy chaining WiFi repeaters to it!

The company completed in-house testing in May and over the last few months has been trialing the system with customers, with the results above, Sumi added.
