Battlefield Will Be Coming Back From The Future

However A Platypus Is A Duck Designed By A Committee
The reason for that aphorism is because this new take on Battlefield will involve teams from DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect and Criterion. They are all owned by EA but all have very different takes on game design so the difficulty in coordinating them into developing a game with at least some consistency will be somewhat unto herding worms. If they can pull it off though, we may finally have a Battlefield worth playing again, as no matter what they do to Battlefield 2042 it still ain’t great.
The 128 player maps are likely to be shrunk back to a more reasonable size; the map and player count both. The specialists were certainly a new idea for 2042 as well, though it’s hard for many players to consider them an improvement over the classes in the previous games. As for setting it in the future, EA didn’t learn the lesson they should have from Battlefield 2142 which was released back in 2006.
Instead they will set the new Battlefield in current times and will go back to basics. That’s about all that Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN could get out of EA for now, we won’t learn much in the way of details until some time next year.
The ungenerous reading here is that "getting back to the core" is marketing speak for "getting the hell away from Battlefield 2042", which has gone down poorly with players for a host of reasons ranging from its 128-player engagements being unfocused, to its "specialist" system being an ill-advised leap into customisable hero shooter territory.
