You must have an older engine, if you are manually setting timings by turning the distributor. Anything probably 10 years or newer has the ECU handle that stuff, and most new cars I have seen have individual coil packs for each cylinder.

More on topic, that’s what I thought too when I read the title. You’re either ‘advancing’ or ‘retarding’ the timing. Awkward word to use in this way, IMO, but not offensive at all.

(and if you’re just a few degrees BTDC, your ignition is indeed too retarded. Should be about 15-25 degrees BTDC so you can leave a little time for combustion.)
